Who doesn’t love an adorable little girl all dressed up for a special occasion in her best dress and her hair styled just right? The one doing the hair care, that’s who! Just kidding, but as busy parents, we all know that it can be difficult to manage the hair care routine for our little girls on top of their already busy schedule of activities (not to mention ours!) Wash day can take forever, and all that product, heat styling and manipulation can damage hair. We all want our little girls to look good, but we don’t necessarily want to spend hours upon hours on their hair care. We need easy styles that look good and make our little girl feel like a princess. Where do we start?
Washing and conditioning are recommended on about a weekly basis. In a nutshell, you need to detangle with a nourishing detangler to create slip between strands, wash with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo, and condition your daughter’s hair weekly. We’ve got a great, detailed blog post on washing and detangling your child’s hair so click here for more in depth instructions.
Of course, there are so many options for styling your daughter’s hair. If you want to go with a protective style, there are lots of options that can help you keep your daughter’s hair free from manipulation all week long.
Cornrows are always a mainstay, and you can spice them up with patterns or combination looks like cornrows leading into twists. Avoid the urge cave to the “Mom, PLEASE” when it comes to adding beads and accessories to your daughter’s style, as these can cause breakage and damage.
- Box Braids are very on trend for girls and women alike. Box braids can be a great option for protecting your little girl’s hair through the dry, winter months. Once you’ve got the box braids in, they can be styled in virtually any way…ponies, larger braids, buns, updos…the possibilities are endless. If your little girl wants a pop of color, add some colored braid extensions. You can get lots of inspiration from Pinterest and get your little girl involved for some fun bonding time.
- So many twists, so little time! Twists are both versatile and stylish for your little girl. Single twists, double twists, Senegalese, Havana or Marley…no matter which look your little girl decides to rock, she’ll be fashion forward in twists. Seal the ends with a small amount of oil to help maintain the twists and when you are ready to remove, use natural hair care products like pure pudding to give your daughter a nice twist out style.
You can leave in a protective style for several days, up to a week, but protective styles should be cared for with a weekly wash or co-wash and as a final treat, mist your daughter’s hair with Olive and Sunflower Leave In to increase manageability and shine! Have your daughter sleep on a satin pillowcase or in a scarf at night to help maintain the style and prevent pulling and tugging.
Hair care routines for our daughters don’t have to be so difficult! Try some of these looks to keep you daughter looking great and feeling fashionable every day!
